In Honduras, more than 264,000 people increased their financial and business skills

In 2021, Fundación Capital implemented the project “Scalable initiatives for the generation of financial and business capacities and access to the financial system for low-income populations in Honduras”, promoted by the Government of Honduras through the National Service of Entrepreneurship and Small Businesses (UNDERSTANDS). This project is part of the “Honduras Se Levanta” initiative, focused on improving the living conditions of the population in a situation of poverty, implementing the scalability of financial and business education to reach the largest number of the population in a situation of poverty, extreme poverty and vulnerability of the country.
Through the initiative, 264,000 people were trained, most of them women, with 73% residing in rural areas and reaching 93% of the country’s municipalities. This was possible thanks to the establishment of alliances with officials from the government and the private sector; and to the training of more than 5,000 leaders and community leaders, who became agents of change in their villages and communities; assuming the challenge of democratizing financial knowledge with their neighbors and family, through the digital tool LISTA SENPRENDE.
Dilcy Medrano participated as a leader in the training process within her community. When she highlights the main contribution she recognizes in her neighbors that: “what has motivated them the most is how to save because they told me — we make money but we don’t save — That was the change that I could see before and after the training: before they had no the habit of saving, now they have it.”
The LISTA app is a self-learning strategy based on an edutainment application (education through entertainment) for digital tablets that, playfully and through personal stories, videos, exercises, and drills, allows incorporating behaviors and financial skills positive for the daily life of the participants. This tool has proven to be a scalable and cost-efficient solution, in addition to generating empowerment at the individual and family level, as well as contributing to the strengthening of the social fabric.
As part of the initiative and to reach more people, LISTA was adapted to the Miskito and Garífuna context to promote financial capacities for low-income communities that are geographically and culturally distant from the rest of the population.
Among other results, the certification of 335 officials of government institutions and private companies in the methodology of strengthening financial and business capacities for the population living in extreme poverty stands out. “The methodological transfer is received by all public officials who have to do with the issue, then each official makes their reply to the population they serve. We, as civil servants, appropriate this methodology and, apart from the fact that it is a benefit that we are going to bring to our population, it also makes a positive change in the lives of each one. In this way we articulate efforts and we can bring a quality government offer that works in the communities we serve” says Brenda Ávila, Coordinator of the Training and Training Unit of the Undersecretary of Social Integration.
On the other hand, more than 5,300 people developed their business skills through the AppTitude Emprendedora digital tool, which provides practical tools on entrepreneurship, financial education, and life skills, through short videos, testimonials, and interactions with playful and intuitive content.
It was shown that those who participated not only improved the management of their finances but also learned to recognize themselves and value the fundamental role they play in the economy of their homes. The methodological model carried out in this initiative differs from traditional models, since it actively involves the community in its learning; producing a collateral effect on local development, by contributing to the strengthening of social capital.
Brenda Ávila assures that the impact of the training was very positive “since these people did not know what saving was, how to make their family budget or start a business. This has given them strength so that these participants enter another level with financial capacities to obtain, for example, a loan, which brings development to the communities of our country ”.
On October 11, 2021, the closing of the initiative was held at Cerro Juana Lainez, in Tegucigalpa (Honduras) with the presence of the President of the Republic, Juan Orlando Hernández; the minister of SENPRENDE, Luis Colindres; the representative of the Secretariat for Development and Social Inclusion (Sedis), Lidieth Mejía, the director of ODEF Financiera S.A, Miguel Navarro, the resident representative of Fundación Capital in Honduras and Central America, Any Reyes; and the resident representative of Fundación Capital Conosur; among other authorities. Some participants were also present who shared their experiences.
In this event, the overcoming of the established goals regarding the development of capacities that will be installed in the country was celebrated and recognized, achieving a positive impact on the lives of people and communities; and betting that the systemic changes generated allow contributing to the reduction of poverty and inequality in Honduras.

En Honduras, más de 264.000 personas aumentaron sus capacidades financieras y empresariales
Durante 2021, Fundación Capital implementó el proyecto “Iniciativas escalables para la generación de capacidades financieras y empresariales y el acceso al sistema financiero para poblaciones de bajos ingresos en Honduras”, impulsado por el Gobierno de Honduras a través del Servicio Nacional de Emprendimiento y Pequeños Negocios (SENPRENDE). Este proyecto es parte de la iniciativa “Honduras Se Levanta”, enfocada en mejorar las condiciones de vida de la población en situación de pobreza, implementando la escalabilidad de la educación financiera y empresarial para alcanzar a la mayor cantidad de población en situación de pobreza, pobreza extrema y vulnerabilidad del país.
A través de la iniciativa se capacitaron a 264.000 personas, en su mayoría mujeres, siendo el 73% residentes en áreas rurales y llegando al 93% de los municipios del país. Esto fue posible, gracias al establecimiento de alianzas con funcionarios y funcionarias del gobierno y del sector privado; y a la capacitación de más de 5.000 lideresas y líderes comunitarios, quienes se convirtieron en agentes de cambio en sus propias aldeas y comunidades; asumiendo el reto de democratizar el conocimiento financiero con sus vecinas, vecinos y familia, a través de la herramienta digital LISTA SENPRENDE.
Dilcy Medrano participó como lideresa en el proceso de capacitación dentro de su comunidad. Cuando destaca el principal aporte reconoce en sus vecinas que: “lo que más las ha motivado es cómo ahorrar, porque me decían — nosotras agarramos dinero pero no ahorramos — Ese fue el cambio que pude ver antes y después de la capacitación: antes no tenían el hábito de ahorrar, ahora sí lo tienen”.
La aplicación LISTA es una estrategia de auto-aprendizaje basada en una aplicación de edutainment (educación a través del entretenimiento) para tabletas digitales que, de manera lúdica y por medio de historias personales, videos, ejercicios y simulacros, permite incorporar comportamientos y habilidades financieras positivas para la vida diaria de las participantes. Esta herramienta ha demostrado ser una solución escalable y de costo eficiente, además de generar empoderamiento a nivel individual y familiar, así como contribuir al fortalecimiento del tejido social.
Como parte de la iniciativa y con el objetivo de llegar a más personas, LISTA fue adaptada al contexto miskito y garífuna para promover capacidades financieras para las comunidades de bajos ingresos que se encuentra distante geográfica y culturalmente del resto de la población.
Entre otros resultados, se destaca la certificación de 335 funcionarios y funcionarias de instituciones de gobierno y empresas privadas en la metodología de fortalecimiento de capacidades financieras y empresariales para población en situación de pobreza extrema. “La transferencia metodológica la recibimos todos los funcionarios públicos que tenemos que ver con el tema, después cada funcionario hizo su réplica a la población que atiende. Nosotros como funcionarios nos apropiamos de esa metodología y, aparte de que es un beneficio que le vamos a llevar a nuestra población, también hace un cambio positivo en la vida de cada uno. De esta manera articulamos esfuerzos y podemos llevar una oferta de gobierno de calidad y que de verdad funcione en nuestras comunidades a las que atendemos” manifiesta Brenda Ávila, Coordinadora de la Unidad de Formación y Capacitación de la Subsecretaría de Integración Social.
Por otro lado, más de 5.300 personas desarrollaron sus capacidades empresariales a través de la herramienta digital AppTitude Emprendedora, que brinda herramientas prácticas sobre emprendimiento, educación financiera y habilidades para la vida, a través de videos cortos, testimonios e interacciones con contenidos lúdicos e intuitivos.
Se demostró que quienes participaron, no solo mejoraron el manejo de sus finanzas, sino que también aprendieron a auto reconocerse y a valorar el papel fundamental que cumplen en la economía de sus hogares. El modelo metodológico llevado adelante en esta iniciativa se diferencia de los modelos tradicionales, ya que involucra de manera activa a la comunidad en su propio aprendizaje; produciendo un efecto colateral en el desarrollo local, al contribuir en el fortalecimiento del capital social.
Brenda Ávila asegura que el impacto de las capacitaciones fue muy positivo “ya que estas personas no sabían qué era el ahorro, cómo hacer su presupuesto familiar o iniciar un emprendimiento. Esto les ha venido a dar una fortaleza para que estas participantes entren a otro nivel con capacidades financieras para obtener por ejemplo un crédito, lo que trae desarrollo a las comunidades de nuestro país”.
El 11 de octubre de 2021 se celebró en el Cerro Juana Lainez, en Tegucigalpa (Honduras) el cierre de la iniciativa con la presencia del Presidente de la República, Juan Orlando Hernández; el ministro de SENPRENDE, Luis Colindres; la representante de la Secretaría de Desarrollo e Inclusión Social (Sedis), Lidieth Mejía, el director de ODEF Financiera S.A, Miguel Navarro, la representante residente de Fundación Capital en Honduras y centroamérica, Any Reyes; y la representante residente de Fundación Capital Conosur; entre otras autoridades. También se hicieron presentes algunos participantes quienes compartieron su experiencia.
En este evento, se celebró y reconoció la superación de las metas establecidas en lo que se refiere al desarrollo de capacidades que quedarán instaladas en el país, logrando impactar positivamente la vida de las personas y de las comunidades; y apostando a que los cambios sistémicos generados permiten contribuir a la reducción de la pobreza y la desigualdad en Honduras.
