APPtitude in Paraguay: Capacity Building with Families in Extreme Poverty

Last month, Paraguay launched a new, tablet-based training program for 9,000 families participating in Sembrando Oportunidades Familia por Familia (Sowing Opportunities Family by Family). This training process, based on the “Graduation” approach, is possible thanks to the support provided by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, the Technical Secretariat for Planning, and Fundación Capital.

The training uses APPtitude, a digital tool created by Fundación Capital specifically for rural populations living in conditions of poverty, and which includes real life examples, strong visuals, games, and audios in Guaraní — one of the native languages in Paraguay. All these elements facilitate the understanding and uptake of the program’s lessons by participating families, families who aspire to reach their goals and improve their life conditions. A total of 110 program officers will be key in reaching the 9,000 families. The training starts with regular visits to the participating households, helping the families to become familiar with the tablet, a tool that many of them had never used before. They also introduced the participants to the main characters of the storyline that the app follows: the González family. Juana Morán, one of the program officers, share her experience with us: “to be honest, at the beginning the families were a little bit scared, and they probably thought the lessons would be really hard to follow. Some of them exclaimed: ‘che memby mba´epiko che ko´a ajapo kua´ata’, a guarani expression meaning: ‘oh dear, how am I going to use this thing!’ But after getting to handle the tablet and listening the parrot character speaking their own language, they found it funny and entertaining, and they soon started feeling more confident and enthusiastic. Most of these people have a true wish to learn and move forward, and in this first stage of the program they all learned the basics about using the tablet, which is something that really motivates me to keep on teaching them new things”. Jesús Figueredo, another program officer, wanted to express his “appreciation and congratulations to the creators of the parrot character, which made me laugh so hard and was also very amusing for the families that I work with.” Now, the 9,000 families are on to the next modules and lessons offered by the app, an experience complemented by face-to-face workshops, individual visits by the Technical Staff, and support for the development of their own entrepreneurial activities. All together, these activities will allow the families to begin to alleviate their living condition, exiting from extreme poverty and defining their own paths forward.

"APPTITUDE": Formando a familias en extrema pobreza en Paraguay

El pasado mes de Enero dio inicio la implementación de capacitaciones en tableta a 9,000 familias del Programa Sembrando Oportunidades Familia por Familia en Paraguay. Esta capacitación, basada en el enfoque graduación, recibe el apoyo del Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería, la Secretaría Técnica de Planificación y Fundación Capital.

La capacitación se realiza a través del aplicativo digital APPtitude de Fundación Capital, una herramienta especialmente diseñada y adaptada para población rural en situación de pobreza, que incluye ejemplos de la vida real, elementos gráficos y audios en guaraní, lo que facilita la comprensión por parte de estas familias que aspiran a cumplir sus metas y mejorar su condición de vida.

Un total de 110 funcionarios del programa iniciaron la capacitación con visitas a las casas de los participantes para explicar a las familias, que nunca antes habían utilizado un dispositivo digital táctil, cómo familiarizarse con la tableta, y presentarles a los personajes que protagonizan la historia: la familia González.

Juana Morán, técnica del Programa, nos comentaba su experiencia con las familias “la verdad que al principio las familias se veían un poco asustadas, porque seguramente pensaron de que las lecciones serían difíciles; algunos decían: che memby mba´epiko che ko´a ajapo kua´ata, que en guaraní significa: mi hija yo cómo voy a saber como se usa esto; pero después de manipular y al escuchar que nuestro amigo luí (el lorito) habla y explica correctamente en guaraní, eso les parecía simpático y se sentían más seguros y muy entusiasmados. La mayoría tienen deseos y ganas de aprender y abrir esa puerta misteriosa para salir adelante, así lo noté, porque en este primer desarrollo todos aprendieron lo básico de la tableta, eso en lo personal me motiva mucho para seguir enseñándoles”.

También Jesús Figueredo, técnico del programa, quiso transmitir su ” felicitación para los creadores del lorito hetama che mo puka (mucho ya me hizo reír) al igual que a mis familias”.

Ahora, las familias continúan el proceso descubriendo los diferentes módulos de capacitación, que se combinan con talleres presenciales, visitas frecuentes de funcionarios, promoción del ahorro y apoyo para la realización de un emprendimiento propio, que permita a las familias salir adelante y superar su condición de pobreza extrema.
